Music: “Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt” by Augustana

The spouse and I first heard Augustana when we saw them as the warmup band for the Goo Goo Dolls/Counting Crows concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee.

We were impressed enough to drop the $25 for the “All The Stars and Boulevards” cd at concert prices. I was quite impressed.

With that intro, I looked forward to their new release “Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt”.

Unfortunately the best thing I can say about this album is that it’s serviceable. As much as I hate to say it, it sounds like they just felt the need to get another album on the shelves.

Lead Singer Dan Layus has a great voice and Augustana showed on their first album they can be creative, but it’s just missing here. The album is uninspired, each song sounds like the one before it and at points it is actually hard to tell which track is playing.

Track 7 – “Either Way, I’ll Break Your Heart Someday” has potential and may find it’s way to the charts if it can get a following.

The fifth track, “Meet You There” is kind of catchy, but is the only other song that is enjoyable on the album, though it is so close to the sound of “Feel Fine” from “All The Stars and Boulevards” that I almost thought they had reused the same song.

These guys have great potential, all the talent is there. I already shared how much I liked “All The Stars”, so we’ll see where it heads from here.
